Major earthquakes strike populated regions globally

A series of powerful earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 7.0 has recently impacted several populated regions. Since June 7, following a 7.8 magnitude quake in Mindanao, Philippines, five additional major tremors have occurred.

Notable seismic events include catastrophic double quakes in Venezuela on June 24, a 7.3 magnitude quake off Mexico on July 17, a 7.4 magnitude quake in Colombia, and a 7.7 magnitude quake near Flores, Indonesia. While approximately 15 such large earthquakes typically occur annually, the recent frequency and their proximity to populated areas have caused significant devastation.

Björn Lund, a seismologist at Uppsala University, notes that while these events occur in clusters, the timing between different regions like Latin America and Southeast Asia is coincidental rather than causally linked. He explains that seismic waves can only trigger subsequent quakes if the distances between plates are sufficiently short.
