Major energy firms dominate Spanish renewable sector

Major energy companies are exerting significant control over the Spanish renewable energy sector. A group of six large firms—Iberdrola, Endesa, Naturgy, Acciona Energía, Repsol, and Solaria—concentrate a substantial portion of the renewable capacity currently connected to the grid.

Determining exact economic control is complicated by complex ownership structures. While installed capacity identifies major players, the rise of investment funds, asset sales, and co-investment models means that companies often manage or maintain assets that they no longer fully own. This distinction between development, management, and actual ownership makes it difficult to establish a uniform baseline for market control.

In the broader European context, solar energy has shown resilience despite adverse conditions. The European Union installed at least 33.8 GW of new solar photovoltaic capacity between January and June 2026, a slight increase compared to the same period in 2025. However, the sector faces challenges including grid limitations, a lack of storage, and regulatory pressures. Experts suggest the EU may fall short of its 750 GW solar target for 2030.
