Major film releases face significant box office losses

Several high-budget film productions have failed to meet commercial expectations, resulting in substantial losses for studios. Among the most notable disappointments are Digger and Supergirl, both released in 2026.

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, Digger follows a billionaire whose company causes an environmental disaster. Despite an estimated budget of $180 million, the film earned only $8 million domestically and $20 million globally during its opening, marking a major failure for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, also struggled at the box office. With a budget of approximately $180 million, the film earned a global total of $126 million following a disappointing opening weekend.

Additionally, Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, released in 2025, saw limited success. Despite featuring Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo, the science fiction satire earned $133 million worldwide against a budget of nearly $120 million.
