Major football stadiums in Mexico and Spain undergo renovations

Major football stadiums in Mexico and Spain are undergoing significant architectural renovations to modernize facilities and increase revenue potential.

In Mexico City, the Estadio Azteca is undergoing an interior renovation led by Cuaik | CDS. The project covers more than 15,000 square meters and integrates new hospitality, food and beverage, suite, and club spaces within the existing concrete structure of the original 1962-1966 stadium. The design utilizes timber, steel, and ceramics to organize new interiors while maintaining the spatial integrity of the original seating bowl.

In Madrid, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home to Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, has been transformed into a multi-purpose entertainment venue. The renovation includes the installation of a new retractable roof supported by two molybdenum-containing steel trusses, each approximately 180 meters long. This structural upgrade aims to allow the venue to host diverse events beyond football, creating sustainable year-round income streams.
