Major highway closures planned for A40 and A45 in North Rhine-Westphalia

Significant road closures are scheduled for major motorways in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region due to construction and maintenance work.

At the Westhofener Kreuz near Schwerte, the connection from the A45 toward Dortmund to the A1 toward Bremen will be closed from October 15 at 8:00 PM until approximately October 30. Autobahn Westfalen is widening the acceleration lane during this period. A detour will be in place, though emergency services will maintain access.

Additionally, a full closure of the A40 in the direction of Essen is scheduled between the Dortmund-West and Dortmund-Lütgendortmund junctions. This closure begins on Monday, October 19, at 7:00 PM and is expected to last until Friday, October 23, at 5:00 AM. The work is part of a larger project to prepare the A40 to handle increased traffic volumes when the A45 undergoes an eight-month closure in 2027 for bridge reconstruction.
