Major League Baseball considers expansion to 32 teams
Major League Baseball (MLB) is considering expanding from 30 to 32 teams, a move that could be addressed following the expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement on December 1. Commissioner Rob Manfred reportedly aims to have the league decide on one East Coast and one West Coast expansion team by January 2029.
In Portland, the expansion bid has progressed through the acquisition of a 33-acre property along the Willamette River via the Portland Diamond Project. Oregon has also authorized a stadium-financing mechanism of up to $800 million through future tax revenues. However, the bid still requires a primary owner capable of covering an expansion fee expected to exceed $2 billion.
Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding MLB player participation in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Negotiations involve the league, the Players Association, and LA28 to resolve disagreements over mandatory participation and disciplinary authority.
