MLB faces potential lockout and federal trial for pitch-fixing

Major League Baseball faces two significant legal and labor crises. Dominican pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz are scheduled to stand trial in a New York federal court next week. They are accused of illicitly altering pitches to benefit online bettors. Federal prosecutors have charged them with conspiracy to commit electronic fraud, honest services fraud, conspiracy to influence sporting competitions through bribery, and money laundering. If convicted on all counts, they face a theoretical maximum of 65 years in prison. Investigators allege Clase manipulated 18 pitches between May 2023 and May 2025, while Ortiz allegedly altered two pitches in June 2025.

Separately, the MLB is approaching a critical labor impasse as the current collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1. Team owners have proposed implementing a mandatory salary cap and floor to reduce payroll disparities, including a rule limiting any single player to 15% of a club’s total payroll. The MLB Players Association, led by attorney Bruce Meyer, has rejected the proposal. Players are instead demanding nearly double the current minimum salary and expanded free agency and arbitration rights. Failure to reach an agreement could result in a lockout, potentially delaying the start of the 2027 season.
