Major League Baseball faces potential lockout over economic disputes

Major League Baseball (MLB) faces a potential lockout following the expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement in December. Negotiations are currently stalled over significant economic issues, most notably the owners' push for a salary cap and floor.

While superstars command massive contracts, such as Juan Soto’s $765 million deal, the labor dispute highlights a vast wealth gap. Of the 30 MLB team owners, 27 are billionaires. The minimum major league salary is $780,000, but many players face short career spans, with the average length being approximately five years.

Predictions regarding the duration of a work stoppage vary among executives and agents. Some insiders suggest a 2-to-4 week delay to the start of the season, while others predict a more severe disruption similar to the 2021-2022 lockout, which lasted 99 days and delayed Opening Day by one week. Some agents suggest a lockout could potentially cancel an entire season.
