Majorca anti‑tourism protests aim to shut down island on July 26

Anti‑tourism activists in the Balearic Islands have announced a coordinated series of demonstrations targeting Majorca (Mallorca) and Menorca. The main protest, organized by the group Menys Turisme Mes Vida ("Less Tourism, More Life"), is scheduled for 7 p.m. on 26 July in Palma, the capital of Majorca. Spokesperson David Comas warned that the island could be brought to a "standstill" as locals seek to highlight the strain of mass tourism on housing, employment and public services.

The campaign follows previous large‑scale marches in 2024 and earlier this year, including a 15,000‑person demonstration in Palma and actions in the Canary Islands. Organisers plan additional rallies in Menorca on 13 June. They cite the upcoming total solar eclipse on 12 August, expected to boost visitor numbers, as a factor that could push the islands beyond capacity. Protest tactics have included drumming, mock police tape, and gluing shut Airbnb key boxes. The activists are calling for measures such as visitor caps and tourism taxes to alleviate housing pressures and protect local quality of life.
