Makarska bans alcohol sales from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to curb nightlife disorder

The city council of Makarska approved a draft decision that will prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages in shops, souvenir stores and tobacco outlets between 21:00 and 06:00. Mayor Zoran Paunović signed the measure, citing the need to protect public health, public order, cultural heritage and the environment. The restriction applies to the entire municipality, including the historic centre and the beaches, where large crowds and intoxication have caused noise, damage to heritage sites and waste‑management problems. Enforcement will be carried out by State Inspectorate inspectors under the amended Trade Law that took effect on 17 June.

The regulation is part of a broader effort by Makarska’s authorities to balance tourism development with residents’ quality of life and the preservation of the town’s cultural identity.
