Makarska commemorates Croatian Navy Day and historical Neretvan victory
Makarska celebrated the Day of the Croatian Navy and the 1139th anniversary of the historical victory of the Neretvans over the Venetians. The event, titled ‘Mucules 887: Stories from the Sea’, commemorated the battle that took place on September 18, 887, in the Makarska waters.
Historical records, including the chronicles of John the Deacon, detail how the Venetian expedition, led by Duke Peter Kandijan, suffered a heavy defeat against the Neretvan forces. The conflict resulted in the death of the Venetian duke and a retreat of the remaining Venetian fleet.
In addition to historical commemorations, the event featured a culinary duel focused on the blue crab, an invasive species in the Adriatic. Chefs Antonio Brajković and Ivan Vukoja prepared dishes to promote the gastronomic use of the crab, aiming to address the ecological challenges this species poses to local fishermen and native species.
