Makarska, Croatia Imposes Night‑Time Ban on Alcohol Sales

The coastal town of Makarska has become the first municipality in Croatia to prohibit the sale of alcoholic drinks between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The restriction applies to shops, bakeries and tobacco stores, but not to restaurants, which may continue to serve alcohol during the night.

The measure aims to curb late‑night gatherings that have caused noise, litter and damage to the historic city centre and beachfront. Local officials note that similar proposals had been discussed for Zadar, Hvar and Split, but Makarska is the first to enact the rule under a commercial‑law amendment that empowers municipalities to regulate alcohol sales for public welfare.
