Makassar Mayor highlights economic growth and food distribution roles

Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin has emphasized the city's strategic importance in driving regional economic growth and food distribution for Eastern Indonesia. During the 74th anniversary celebrations of Kalla Group, the Mayor praised the company's long-standing contribution to the local economy, employment, and urban development, citing successful public-private collaborations such as the revitalization of Jalan Hasanuddin.

Economic indicators for Makassar show an upward trend, with growth increasing from 6.61 percent in the first quarter to 7.04 percent in the second quarter. Additionally, the open unemployment rate has decreased from 10.6 percent to 9.6 percent compared to the previous year.

In a separate initiative, the Mayor highlighted Makassar's role as a central hub for food distribution across Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua. Participating in the launch of the Food Inflation Control and Prosperous Food Movement (GPIPS), officials noted that Makassar serves as a gateway for food supplies to the eastern region. Efforts to stabilize prices and manage inflation include strengthening production and improving distribution chains to mitigate climate change risks.
