Makedox festival hosts debate on film criticism and algorithms

The Makedox festival is hosting a panel discussion titled ‘Film Criticism in the Era of Algorithms?’ at the Laboratorij in Skopje. The event explores how social media, digital platforms, and algorithmic recommendations are reshaping how audiences discover and consume films.

The discussion features an international group of film critics, journalists, and festival programmers, including Marina Kostova (FIPRESCI Vice President), Marina D. Richter from Austria, Alfonso Rivera from Spain, and Murtada Elfadl from the USA. The session is moderated by Christine Camadesis, Executive and Artistic Director of FIPADOC.

Key themes include the potential loss of independent critical voices in an era of sophisticated marketing campaigns and whether there is still space for negative reviews and disagreement when digital promotion often presents every film as a ‘must-see’ event.
