Makoto Hasebe discusses leadership and past experiences
Makoto Hasebe, a coach for the Japan national football team, shared insights into his playing career and leadership experiences during a recent talk show. Reflecting on his time as captain under manager Alberto Zaccheroni, Hasebe recounted a locker room incident during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. When a player played loud music on a speaker, Hasebe expressed concern regarding the impact on players accustomed to the J-League environment. Upon consulting Zaccheroni, the manager instructed Hasebe to stop the music, leading to some dissatisfaction among the players.
Hasebe also discussed his personal evolution in mental preparation, noting that while he once struggled with excessive pre-match tension and sleeplessness, he eventually transitioned to a routine focused on relaxation and controlled focus.
Regarding his professional discipline, Hasebe recalled a mistake during a national team trip from the Middle East to Uzbekistan, where a failure to adjust his watch for a one-hour time difference caused him to be late for a meal, resulting in a fine. He emphasized his continued commitment to professional standards, stating he is currently avoiding social gatherings to focus on preparations for the upcoming Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
