Maksimir Stadium project sparks controversy in Zagreb

The winning architectural design for the new Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb has triggered significant public debate and political criticism. The project, proposed by the Italian studio VG13, features a design with approximately 35,000 covered seats but includes open corners between the stands.

Zagreb Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet defended the design, stating that fans are resilient enough to withstand rain and north winds. He noted that the concept aims to honor the original 1950s stadium by Vladimir Turina, despite public preference for modern, fully enclosed structures like Munich’s Allianz Arena. However, a survey indicated that nearly 80 percent of participants were dissatisfied with the proposal.

The project faces further delays as the public procurement process is currently stalled before the State Commission for Supervision of Public Procurement following three formal complaints.
