Kenya road crash kills 17 pilgrims near Salama
At least 17 people, primarily Catholic pilgrims, were killed in a multi-vehicle collision on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Salama in Makueni County. The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 3, 2026, as the victims were traveling from Mombasa to the National Shrine in Subukia, Nakuru County, for National Prayer Day.
Police reports indicate the crash was triggered when a truck driver attempted an unsafe overtaking maneuver, causing a chain reaction that involved several vehicles, including a 14-seater minibus carrying the pilgrims. The driver of the minibus and 16 passengers, most of whom were women, died at the scene. Other fatalities included the driver of the initial truck and three individuals from a trailer.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a multi-disciplinary investigation into the incident. Officials noted that the Mlima Kiu-Salama stretch is a recognized accident blackspot. President William Ruto and the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa expressed deep condolences to the families and the Mikindani Parish community. Postmortem examinations for the victims began on Sunday at Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital.
