Mala medical center uses bottled water due to vinyl chloride detection
The medical center in Mala has been operating with closed taps for several months, relying on bottled water for patients and staff due to the detection of elevated levels of vinyl chloride. The Haría City Council has demanded urgent explanations and official reports regarding the origin and scope of the contamination.
Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa clarified that the issue is localized within the medical center’s internal plumbing and is not present in the public water supply network. According to the water consortium, the contamination was detected during routine quality monitoring in late April, with results confirmed in early May.
While the public distribution network meets all quality standards, the responsibility for maintaining internal building installations lies with the owners. The Canary Islands Health Service is reportedly working to replace and condition the affected internal facilities to resolve the situation.
