Malaika Mihambo finishes fifth in long jump at European Championships

At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, long jump favorite Malaika Mihambo finished in fifth place with a jump of 6.94 meters. The 32-year-old German athlete, a former Olympic and world champion, struggled with technical errors and wind conditions during the final. Italian Larissa Iapichino won the gold medal with a jump of 7.00 meters, followed by Great Britain's Jasmin Sawyers with silver (6.99m) and France's Hilary Kpatcha with bronze (6.98m).

Mihambo expressed deep emotional distress following the result, noting that she had not medaled at a major championship in ten years. She attributed her performance to technical issues, stating she was often too far from the board. Despite the disappointment, she remains focused on future competitions, including the 2028 Olympics.

In other championship news, Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis secured his fourth European title with a new championship record of 6.15 meters. Duplantis noted that stomach issues caused by eating Indian food before the event prevented him from attempting a new world record.
