Malaita Province implements national health programme to combat malaria

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is conducting a five-day National Healthy Settings programme in Auki, Malaita Province, to strengthen provincial health leadership and community-based action. The initiative specifically targets provinces with significant malaria challenges, including Malaita, Guadalcanal, Central Islands, Honiara City, Western, and Choiseul.

Led by National Healthy Settings Coordinator Selwyn Warito, the programme aims to address the root causes of diseases within communities rather than relying solely on clinical treatment. The approach emphasizes the integration of health initiatives into schools, churches, and local households. Key objectives include training health workers on new implementation guidelines, strengthening the Provincial Healthy Settings Coordinating Committee, and fostering policy integration.

Stakeholders, including the Malaita Provincial Health Council, have expressed support for the initiative. The strategy aligns with the Solomon Islands’ National Roadmap for Malaria Elimination 2026–2040, which seeks to eliminate malaria by 2038 through a ‘whole-of-society’ approach. Proposed actions include mosquito breeding site management, the use of insecticide-treated nets, and a ‘Test, Treat and Track’ protocol to ensure rapid response to suspected cases.
