Malang angkot drivers protest Trans Jatim expansion

Public transport drivers in Malang, organized under the Front Aliansi Sopir Angkutan Malang (ASAM), held demonstrations at the Malang City Transportation Agency (Dishub) and the City DPRD office on Monday, September 28, 2026. The protesters are opposing the expansion of the Trans Jatim service to Corridor 2, arguing that the existing Corridor 1 has already threatened the livelihoods of conventional angkot (public minivan) drivers.

Protesters demanded transparency regarding operational compensation funds from the East Java Provincial Government, with leaders alleging that certain officials or organizations may be withholding information about these payments. Their demands include the full realization of previous agreements, a transparent evaluation of Trans Jatim Corridor 1 operations, and economic justice for all drivers.

In response, the Malang City Transportation Agency stated that they are working to ensure angkot drivers are not marginalized. Head of Dishub Malang, Widjaja Saleh Putra, noted that the city is preparing a student transport program to provide alternative income and employment for these drivers as the Trans Jatim service expands.
