Malang authorities investigate purple discoloration in Brantas River

The Malang City Government is investigating a discoloration of the Brantas River in the Mergosono area of the Kedungkandang district. The water has turned a purple hue, prompting officials to determine if the cause is industrial waste or other environmental factors.

Mayor Wahyu Hidayat stated that the administration will coordinate with the local Environmental Agency (DLH) to analyze the data. He emphasized that if investigations reveal illegal waste disposal by a company, the local government will impose sanctions, including the revocation of business permits and business closures.

Representatives from Perum Jasa Tirta (PJT) I, the Malang Environmental Agency, and local sub-district leadership have inspected the site. However, officials noted that the exact chemical composition causing the color change can only be confirmed through laboratory testing.
