Malappuram driver suicide sparks protests against MVD corruption

The death of Shoukath, an autorickshaw driver in Malappuram, has sparked protests and political condemnation following allegations of corruption within the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD).

Shoukath reportedly died by suicide after being unable to obtain a fitness certificate for his vehicle, a situation that allegedly prevented him from working and led to financial distress. Political leaders, including Pinarayi Vijayan, have accused MVD officials and an agent lobby of harassment, suggesting that Shoukath was targeted because he attempted to approach the Kondotty Sub Regional Transport Office directly rather than using middlemen to pay bribes.

In response to the incident, organizations such as DYFI and CITU have called for protest marches to demand accountability from MVD officials. Chief Minister V D Satheesan has contacted the family and assured that action will be taken against any officials found guilty of misconduct.
