Malaria cases surge in Ethiopia and Sindh province
Ethiopia has experienced a significant resurgence in malaria, recording over 7.3 million confirmed cases and 1,157 deaths in 2024. This represents the highest annual incidence in seven years. According to a landscape analysis published in the Malaria Journal, the surge is attributed to long-term gaps in diagnostics, surveillance, insecticide-treated nets, and indoor residual spraying, rather than a single isolated cause. Plasmodium falciparum accounted for more than two-thirds of these infections.
In Pakistan, the Sindh province reported 117,016 malaria cases during the first nine months of 2026. Data from the Sindh Health Department indicates that the Hyderabad Division recorded the highest number of infections with 46,183 cases, followed by the Larkana Division with 33,785. While case numbers are significant, health officials reported no deaths or hospitalizations for cerebral malaria in the province during this period.
