Malaria control initiatives expand through net distribution and data modelling
Efforts to combat malaria are advancing through both physical prevention campaigns and data-driven research in Papua New Guinea and Nigeria.
In Papua New Guinea, a major malaria prevention campaign has launched in Morobe Province. Supported by the Global Fund, the initiative aims to distribute approximately 92,000 long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) to households in the Markham and Tewae-Siassi districts. Health Secretary Pascoe Kase noted that the country records roughly one million malaria cases annually and emphasized the need for increased domestic investment as external funding declines.
In Nigeria, researchers are utilizing the Nigeria Malaria Modelling Fellowship to enhance disease control through mathematical and computational methods. By applying data science, epidemiology, and machine learning, fellows are studying mosquito behavior, vaccination coverage, and disease prevalence. This analytical approach aims to provide evidence that can more effectively inform public health interventions and understand transmission patterns in various communities.
