Frankfurt Airport reports malaria outbreak with two deaths

An unusual malaria outbreak has been reported at Frankfurt Airport in Germany, resulting in two deaths and six confirmed infections among airport employees. Health authorities believe the infection was introduced via Anopheles mosquitoes that may have traveled to Frankfurt from a malaria-endemic region through aircraft, cargo, or luggage.

This phenomenon, referred to by experts as ‘airport malaria’, is distinct from typical infectious diseases because it does not involve human-to-human transmission. Instead, it relies on the introduction of infected mosquitoes into the local environment.

Globally, malaria remains one of the most dangerous infectious diseases. According to the World Health Organization, there were an estimated 282 million cases and approximately 610,000 deaths in 2024, with the vast majority occurring in Africa. The disease is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes and can progress rapidly to severe illness or death if untreated.
