Malaspina juvenile prison fire in Palermo leaves 11 injured

An emergency unfolded at the Malaspina juvenile prison in Palermo after a fire was intentionally set within a detention section. The incident resulted in 11 people being hospitalized, including both detainees and prison officers, due to smoke inhalation and physical assaults.

Four young detainees identified as the perpetrators of the fire and the subsequent attacks on two police officers are being transferred to correctional facilities outside of Sicily. During the chaos, three officers required hyperbaric oxygen treatment for smoke inhalation, while two others were hospitalized following assaults.

In response to the event, several prison unions, including OSAPP, UIL Fp Polizia Penitenziaria, USPP, and FNS Cisl, have declared a state of agitation. The unions are demanding the immediate closure and restructuring of the facility, citing severe staff shortages and inadequate security conditions for officers.
