Malatya hosts 9th International Golden Apricot Chess Tournament
The 9th International Golden Apricot Chess Tournament has officially begun in Malatya, Turkey. Organized jointly by the Malatya Metropolitan Municipality and the Turkish Chess Federation, the event features 625 athletes, including 118 participants from 15 different countries.
Malatya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Sami Er stated that the tournament is part of a broader effort to support the city's normalization process through social and sporting activities following recent earthquakes. The tournament, which features a total prize pool of 1 million Turkish Lira, is scheduled to conclude with an awards ceremony on August 29.
Chess Provincial Representative Cemal Gürsel Toy noted that while previous chess activities in the region had been interrupted by the pandemic and earthquakes, the tournament has seen significant growth and support in recent years.
