Malatya officials seek to boost economic value of local apricots

Yüksel Duman, the Malatya Provincial Chairman of the Great Unity Party, has emphasized the need to maximize the economic value of Malatya apricots. He highlighted that the geographical indication of the fruit is a significant brand power for the city that must be leveraged to benefit local producers and the regional economy.

Duman noted that an upcoming meeting organized by the Malatya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which will include Prof. Dr. Muhammed Zeki Durak, President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, will address issues regarding geographical indication, supervision, governance, and branding processes.

Duman argued that rather than merely selling apricots as raw materials, the region should develop an economic structure capable of processing, packaging, and transforming the fruit into various products to reach global markets under local brands. He stated that if the name of the apricot is Malatya, the resulting added value should remain within Malatya.
