Malatya producers revive ancient Tahannebi grape variety

Producers in the Akçadağ district of Malatya are reviving the production of Tahannebi, an ancient grape variety that was nearly lost due to low yields and a short shelf life. Operating on approximately 500 decares of land, the initiative aims to reintegrate this traditional crop into the economy.

Producer Yusuf Kırteke reported a surge in demand that has made it difficult to keep up with orders. The grapes are being sold both for drying and for fresh consumption, with 5-kilogram packages being delivered directly to customers to maintain freshness. Kırteke expressed the ambition to turn Malatya grapes into a global brand, similar to the international reputation of Malatya apricots.

In addition to Tahannebi, other varieties such as Öküzgözü, Şam, Antep Karası, and Alphonse Lavallée are being cultivated to meet domestic demand. The harvest for Tahannebi is expected to begin shortly, marking a significant step in boosting the region's agricultural economy.
