Malatya water plant runs continuous Quran recitation as €70 million alternative water project nears completion

The Gündüzbey Kaptaj Water Plant in Malatya’s Yeşilyurt district has been broadcasting a nonstop recitation of the Qur'an since 1995. The facility draws natural spring water from the Beydağı foothills, which requires only chlorination to meet national and international drinking‑water standards and is delivered to the city by gravity without chemical treatment. Mayor Sami Er says the practice adds a spiritual dimension to the plant’s essential service and notes that the plant is monitored 24 hours a day, with flow rates of 2,000‑3,500 litres per second.

Following the February 6 earthquakes, turbidity in the plant’s water highlighted the need for additional sources. With international financing, a €70 million project is underway to secure alternative drinking water from the Euphrates basin, expected to be integrated into the system within two years.
