Malawi advances energy infrastructure through hydro and regional power links

Malawi is advancing its energy infrastructure through two major developments: the North Rumphi Hydropower Cascade and the completion of the 400kV Malawi-Mozambique (MOMA) electricity interconnector.

Nyika Hydropower Group has signed a Transmission Connection Agreement with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) for the 51MW North Rumphi project. This run-of-river development in the Rumphi District consists of three plants—Phoka (13MW), Munonono (18MW), and Chiweta (20MW)—and is expected to generate approximately 276,000MWh annually. The project aims to increase Malawi’s installed generation capacity by about 9.2% and provides geographic diversification from the Shire River-based plants.

Simultaneously, Malawi has completed construction on its side of the 400kV MOMA interconnector. The line was energized on August 8 and has undergone successful hot commissioning. This link is intended to connect Malawi to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), enabling regional electricity trading. While the physical infrastructure is operational, Malawi, Mozambique, and other partners are currently finalizing the tariffs and commercial arrangements necessary to begin trading.
