Malawi and Uganda ministers call for increased fiscal discipline

Finance ministers in Malawi and Uganda are calling for increased fiscal discipline and improved accountability to drive economic growth and protect public resources.

In Malawi, Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha urged the Malawi Revenue Authority to uphold integrity and prudence in tax collection. Speaking at the Dedza One Border Post, he emphasized that honest revenue administration is vital for funding public services and building investor confidence. The government is also implementing measures to simplify filing procedures and expand export incentives for local manufacturers to improve regional competitiveness.

In Uganda, Finance Minister Henry Musasizi challenged accountants to move beyond traditional bookkeeping to become strategic partners in financial management. During a seminar for the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda, Musasizi stressed that accountants must provide the evidence-based insights necessary for sound decision-making and effective budget execution. He highlighted their critical role in tracking revenue, managing liabilities, and ensuring that public funds produce intended development outcomes.
