Malawi Electoral Commission faces leadership and operational crisis

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is facing intense scrutiny following several operational and leadership controversies. Under Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, the commission has dealt with disputes regarding officials' travel, including reports of police interference at Kamuzu International Airport. While the MEC issued a statement refuting claims that officials were prevented from traveling to Mozambique, the commission did not confirm if the trip ultimately took place.

Further tensions have emerged regarding the commission's independence and accessibility. Media outlets have reported difficulties in communicating with MEC leadership, noting that inquiries often go unanswered. Additionally, a standoff occurred when the MEC refused a government order to relocate its Lilongwe warehouse to Blantyre, leading to the warehouse being sealed by a landlord.
