Malawi Electoral Commission holds national post-election review conference

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) held a national conference in Lilongwe on August 20, 2026, to conduct a post-election review of the 2025 general elections. The conference aimed to identify lessons learned and strengthen future electoral processes by gathering input from political parties, civil society, the judiciary, and development partners.

MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja stated the review was intended to understand what worked and what challenges were encountered to improve future elections. United Nations Resident Coordinator Rebecca Adda-Dontoh commended Malawi for the peaceful conduct of the 2025 election and the constitutional transfer of power.

During the proceedings, political analyst Ernest Thindwa advocated for structural reforms to enhance the commission's independence. Specifically, he proposed removing the President's power to appoint the MEC chairperson to prevent potential conflicts of interest, as the President is often an interested party in elections. Thindwa also suggested reviewing political party financing to mitigate corruption risks.
