Malawi faces fuel and medicine shortages one year into DPP rule
One year into the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration, Malawi faces persistent economic challenges despite campaign promises of reform. The country is currently grappling with severe foreign exchange shortages, which have directly triggered a fuel crisis. Because Malawi relies on imports for petroleum products, the lack of available dollars has led to renewed diesel shortages and erratic petrol supplies, forcing transport operators and businesses to face rising costs.
The economic instability is also impacting the healthcare sector. The Central Medical Stores Trust (CMST) reports that the availability of essential medicines has dropped to 40 percent.
Public discontent is mounting as the government struggles to address long-standing issues including crumbling infrastructure, corruption, and food security. While some progress has been noted, critics argue the administration has yet to justify the public's vote of faith by delivering on core promises such as reliable fuel supplies, improved roads, and decisive action against corruption.
