Malawi football faces coaching turnover and squad selection scrutiny

Malawi's football landscape is experiencing significant coaching turnover across both the top flight and national youth levels. In the FDH Bank Premiership, several clubs have dismissed their managers following inconsistent results. Notable departures include Tione Tembo of Kamuzu Barracks, Gilbert Chirwa of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, and Audlow Makonyola of Karonga United. Even successful coaches have faced consequences; Mighty Wanderers suspended Bob Mpinganjira following an Airtel Top 8 final defeat despite the team's strong league standing. Similarly, Ekhaya FC dismissed Enos Chatama after a poor run of league form, despite his recent success in cup competitions.

Following his dismissal from Ekhaya FC, Enos Chatama has defended his selection of 14 players from that club for the Malawi Under-20 National Team squad. Addressing concerns regarding potential bias in the 32-member group ahead of the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations Cosafa Qualifiers, Chatama stated that selections are based on long-term player development and familiarity rather than club affiliation. He noted that many of the selected players have been part of the national junior development system since 2022.
