Malawi launches energy and agricultural projects to combat shortages

The Malawi government is implementing several large-scale initiatives to address energy shortages and food security concerns driven by climate risks. To combat persistent power shortages, Energy Minister Jean Mathanga commissioned the first 10MW phase of the EGENCO Salima-Nanjoka Solar PV Power Plant. This project is intended to eventually reach a 50MW capacity. Additionally, the government is pursuing the 358MW Mpatamanga Hydropower Project and plans to join the Southern African Power Pool via Mozambique to access an additional 50MW of electricity.

In response to the anticipated impact of El Nino, the government has also invested K16 billion in agricultural resilience. This package includes K10.8 billion for 800 solar-powered irrigation systems to be supplied by Fisd Limited. The initiative aims to support 8,000 farmers and produce 100,000 metric tonnes of food, primarily maize, to mitigate potential hunger during the 2026/27 lean season. The remaining K5.2 billion of the investment will fund farmer training, equipment installation, and the distribution of seeds and fertilizer.
