Malawi loses $700 million annually to gold smuggling

Malawi is losing an estimated $700 million in annual revenue due to the illicit smuggling of gold. This loss significantly impacts the nation’s public finances and its ability to stabilize foreign exchange reserves.

Much of the gold is sourced from artisanal and small-scale miners who bypass official government channels to sell to unlicensed buyers. These traders often offer immediate cash at rates mirroring international spot prices, whereas official channels may involve more bureaucracy or lower payouts. The smuggled gold is typically transported through neighboring countries before reaching international hubs, such as Dubai.

To combat this, the Malawian government is working to formalize the sector. Mining Minister Thoko Tembo stated that the Malawi Mining Investment Company (Mamico) is developing mining cooperatives and structured gold-buying channels. The strategy involves establishing official buying points closer to mining communities, such as in the Kasungu District, to provide miners with a convenient and legitimate alternative to illegal syndicates.
