Malawi Minister proposes China’s economic model as development blueprint

Malawi’s Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, has identified China’s economic transformation as a potential blueprint for Malawi’s development. Speaking at Peking University during a ministerial study tour, Phiri presented a paper titled “My Country and My Perspective on Communist Party of China (CPC)’s Governance.”

Phiri highlighted how China transitioned from a peasant-based agrarian economy to a global industrial powerhouse since 1949, lifting hundreds of millions out of poverty. He attributed this success to the disciplined utilization of core factors of production, specifically land and people.

Drawing parallels to Malawi, Phiri noted that the country must harness its “youth dividend”—a large population of young people—to drive the Vision Malawi 2063 development blueprint. He argued that effective management of human capital and land productivity is essential to shifting Malawi from a subsistence, import-dependent economy to an industrialized, export-driven one. Additionally, Phiri used the platform to promote investment opportunities in Malawi’s tourism and agricultural sectors to Chinese scholars and investors.
