Malawi Parliament approves K10.98 trillion budget for economic recovery

Malawi’s National Assembly has approved the K10.978 trillion (approximately US$6.46 billion) 2026/2027 National Budget. Presented by Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha, the fiscal programme aims to stabilize the economy, strengthen food security, and restore growth amidst inflation and public finance pressures.

Agriculture is a primary focus of the budget, receiving K971.3 billion (US$571.3 million). Of this, K931.1 billion (US$547.7 million) is earmarked to increase domestic food production and replenish strategic grain reserves to address maize deficits and rising food prices.

The government is also targeting fiscal consolidation, seeking to reduce the budget deficit from 11.9 percent to 9 percent of GDP to limit public borrowing. Other key allocations include K558.07 billion (US$328.2 million) for health services, K316.6 billion (US$186.2 million) for education, and K447.1 billion (US$263 million) for road infrastructure.
