Malawi Parliament interviews candidates for judiciary watchdog
The Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of the Malawi Parliament has commenced interviews for the position of commissioner for the Independent Complaints Commission (ICC). The ICC is a body established under the Judicial Service Administration Act 2024 to investigate complaints against judges and court officers.
Out of six shortlisted candidates selected from 23 applicants, four attended the initial interviews. One candidate is scheduled for a later date, while a sixth individual failed to appear. Committee vice-chairperson Joshua Malango stated that it is unclear if the absent candidate has withdrawn from the process.
The recruitment process is a key step in implementing judicial reforms enacted two years ago, including the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Courts (Amendment) Bill 2024. Organizations such as the Malawi Law Society and the Human Rights Defenders Coalition have expressed interest in the proceedings, emphasizing the need for a commissioner who possesses integrity and independence to restore public confidence in the administration of justice.
