Malawi Parliament launches 12 inquiries into national crises

The National Assembly of Malawi has launched 12 parliamentary inquiries into critical national issues, including electricity shortages, fuel supply, pension management, mining, and passport services. Speaker Sameer Suleman announced that joint parliamentary committees will conduct evidence-based investigations to ensure public institutions are held accountable for their performance and the management of national resources.

One specific inquiry will examine fuel imports, focusing on the involvement of local versus foreign transporters. Data from the first half of the year indicates that the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma) utilized foreign transporters for 84 percent of its trips, while local transporters handled 81 percent of trips for Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL). Additionally, Nocma will face an inquiry regarding allegations of fraud involving contract banking details.

Malawi’s opposition parties have responded to the announcement by criticizing the administration of President Peter Mutharika. Leaders from the United Democratic Front, UTM, and Malawi Congress Party have called for increased transparency, with some urging the President to address the nation to restore public confidence amidst ongoing economic and service delivery challenges.
