Malawi Parliament Strengthens Oversight and Banking Protections
Speaker of the National Assembly, Right Honourable Sameer Suleman, has been credited with making Malawi’s Parliament more disciplined and assertive, increasing scrutiny of government actions and boosting public confidence in the legislative branch.
In a separate move, the Parliament approved the Banking (Amendment) Bill No. 9 of 2026, introduced by Finance and Economic Planning Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha. The legislation expands the powers of the Registrar of Financial Institutions to intervene in failing banks, authorises recapitalisation, mergers and bridge banks, and limits insider lending to 10 % of a bank’s core capital, aiming to protect depositors and preserve financial stability.
