Malawi police rescue British national after kidnapping shootout

Malawi police have rescued 47-year-old British national Nusrat Osman following a week-long abduction. The rescue operation took place on a Thursday night on the outskirts of Blantyre.

During the operation, police engaged in a shootout with suspects armed with an AK-47 and a pistol. Two suspects, described as the masterminds, were shot dead at the scene. While eight suspects were reportedly involved in the abduction, six remain at large. Authorities noted that no ransom had been demanded for Osman’s release.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira was wounded in the stomach during the operation but is reported to be in stable condition at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital. Inspector General Richard Luhanga commended Kayira’s bravery and attributed the success of the mission to both police dedication and community assistance. Osman has been reunited with her family and is receiving medical and psychological evaluations.
