Malawi political parties reject MCP apology over Tonse Alliance collapse

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has issued an apology regarding the collapse of the Tonse Alliance, but the gesture has been rejected by former coalition partners. The United Transformation Movement (UTM) and the Freedom Party have dismissed the apology as being too late to repair fractured political relationships.

UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala stated that the apology confirms long-standing grievances that the alliance agreement—which originally designated the parties as equal partners with specific cabinet responsibilities—was never honored. Njawala noted that the late former Vice-President Saulos Chilima, who died in a 2024 plane crash, was “tormented” by the MCP leadership due to these broken promises.

While MCP publicity secretary Jessie Kabwila called for opposition unity ahead of the 2030 General Election, other leaders remain skeptical. Freedom Party president Khumbo Kachali questioned the timing of the media-based apology, noting that similar outreach was not attempted during the actual period of the alliance's negotiations.
