Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika heads to South Africa on private visit

President Arthur Peter Mutharika of Malawi departed on a private trip to South Africa, marking his fourth such journey in seven months. In a video released by the State House as he left, Mutharika warned party rivals that any challenge to his leadership would have to wait until the end of his term in 2030, emphasizing his intention to complete the full five‑year mandate.

The visit comes amid a recent wave of Malawian migrants returning from South Africa following heightened immigration enforcement and anti‑foreigner unrest there. While the Malawian presidency did not link the trip to the repatriation effort, officials have been coordinating transport for returning nationals and urging those still in South Africa to use legal channels. No official programme or meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was disclosed.
