Malawi pushes for medical research and herbal medicine regulation

Malawi is moving toward greater integration of medical research and traditional practices to strengthen its healthcare system. Vice President Jane Ansah has called for increased health research and innovation across Africa to reduce dependence on foreign-developed medicines and healthcare solutions. Speaking at a conference for clinical officers and physician associates, she emphasized the need for better working conditions, mental health support, and adequate protective equipment for health workers.

Simultaneously, scientists and traditional healers are advocating for the formal regulation and scientific validation of herbal medicine. At a research conference hosted by Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, experts highlighted that while traditional remedies are vital due to their accessibility and affordability in rural areas, they require rigorous scientific research to ensure safety and efficacy. To support this integration, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences is preparing to launch a Bachelor’s Degree in Herbal Medicine.
