Malawi records K10.8 billion fiscal deficit in first quarter
Malawi recorded a K10.8 billion fiscal deficit during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year. While the government saw significant deficits in April and May, a sharp increase in tax and non-tax revenue, alongside reduced spending, resulted in a K349.9 billion surplus in June.
Parallel to these fiscal challenges, Malawi’s economy faces structural issues related to repeated currency devaluations. The kwacha has undergone a cumulative 69% devaluation, with parallel market rates reaching K4,000 per USD. Experts from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the Economics Association of Malawi note that these devaluations have failed to resolve trade deficits or boost exports due to weak industrial capacity and a heavy reliance on imported inputs. Without structural reforms to increase local production, the country risks a cycle of devaluation that offers little long-term economic benefit.
