Malawi Scorchers celebrate Egypt win at NBM-sponsored watch party
Fans gathered at AJ’s Lounge in Blantyre for a National Bank of Malawi (NBM plc) watch party to cheer the Malawi women’s national football team, the Scorchers, as they defeated Egypt 3‑1 in their second Group C match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The crowd sang the team anthem “Ona Pangolin,” chanted “Mwanayo mwanayo, mwana ndi Mwana,” and waved Malawian flags, recalling the earlier 3‑2 victory over Nigeria.
Supporters such as Clinton Mpezeni praised the performance, while Lucy Francis highlighted the quality of players like Temwa Chawinga and Tabitha Chawinga. NBM’s Head of Corporate Banking, Bernard Masi, reiterated the bank’s long‑term sponsorship of the Scorchers, saying the partnership predates the tournament and will continue to provide platforms for national support.
The event underscored the growing enthusiasm for women’s football in Malawi and the role of corporate backing in fostering community celebration of the team’s historic WAFCON campaign.
